Paint applied thinly and thickly without thinner.  The blue undercoat created by severeal layers of transparent blue laid down and pulled up - sort of like a Mr. Miyagi "wax on - wax off".  The symbols were purely intuituive.  Once dried - a layer of interference paint subtracted in part for a milky vision with changing reflections based on light and angle of view.
